Game Overview

I fired this up expecting more of the usual Backrooms walking simulator stuff, but Nextbots Backrooms Sandbox is way dumber and way more fun than that. You're not wandering liminal hallways looking for an exit. You're on a space base carved into an asteroid, and the whole place has that weird, sterile sci-fi aesthetic from old PC games. Everything is kind of blocky and flat-shaded, but it works for the vibe. The monsters aren't subtle ghosts either--they're these goofy, iconic nextbots that just sprint at you from around corners. It feels less like horror and more like a frantic arcade shooter where you're constantly backpedaling and spraying bullets. The sandbox part is real--you can pull up a menu and just spawn waves of enemies wherever you want with a portal gun, which is hilarious because you can accidentally trap yourself in a room full of them. The leaderboard is the main hook for me. It's not deep or polished, but there's something addictive about seeing your score tick up and trying to beat your friends' runs. Controls are simple on PC, and the mobile version actually works okay, which surprised me. Anyone who likes wave-based shooters or dumb co-op-adjacent chaos without the co-op will get hooked. Just don't expect a story or any handholding--it drops you on that rock and tells you to survive.

About Nextbots Backrooms Sandbox

So you're on this asteroid base with these endless gray hallways that look exactly like the Backrooms but with a space station vibe. The monsters--Nextbots--come at you from all directions. Some are fast and skinny, others are big and take way more shots to drop. You have a gun, and you just shoot everything that moves. That's the basic loop. You run through corridors, pop into rooms, blast anything that gets close. The portal gun lets you open a rift and monsters pour out of it--you can control where they spawn, which is useful when you want to farm points or just create chaos. There's a leaderboard that tracks your score, so you're always trying to beat your own record or your friend's. The difficulty ramps up because after the first few waves, the game starts throwing multiple types at once. You'll have the fast ones zipping around while the tanky ones block doorways. Later on, you get access to better weapons--I found a shotgun that clears a room pretty quick, but ammo is scattered around the base. You have to remember where the pickups are. The Portal Gun is the real game-changer. You can summon enemies right in front of you or behind a group to trap them. There's a mechanical satisfaction in lining up a shot through a portal and watching a crowd of Nextbots get wrecked. The asteroid base has different sections: the main hangar, a command center with computers, and these creepy dormitory halls. Each area has its own layout, so you learn the choke points. The jump/flight mechanic is weird at first--you can float around in zero-g sections, which changes how you aim. On the phone, the controls are a bit awkward because you're tapping the right side to shoot and move the camera, but it works after a few runs. The monster spawn panel lets you pick which Nextbot to summon, so you can customize your challenge. Some people just spam the hardest ones to see how long they last. The satisfying moment is when you clear a big wave and your score jumps up on the leaderboard. There's no real story or end goal--it's just survival and score chasing. That's fine for a sandbox game. The aesthetic is that liminal space feeling but in space, which is neat. The silence between fights is creepy, then everything explodes into action.

Tips & Tricks

  • **TIPS & TRICKS**

Spawning monsters with the Portal Gun is fun, but don't just spam them everywhere. If you summon a horde right on top of yourself, you'll get shredded instantly. I learned that the hard way. Instead, spawn them at a distance and pick them off as they approach -- it gives you breathing room.

Weapon placement matters more than you'd think. The guns are scattered across the asteroid, not all in one spot. Memorize where the shotgun and the rapid-fire rifle are. When things get hectic, you don't want to be fumbling around looking for ammo or a better gun while a Nextbot is chewing on your leg.

Flying with the space bar is a lifesaver, but it's not infinite. You'll run out of fuel or stamina or whatever it is after a few seconds, and then you're stuck on the ground. Use flight to dodge big groups or reach high ledges, not as a default movement mode. I used to waste it constantly and then get cornered.

The monster spawn panel (Tab on PC) lets you pick different Nextbots, not just random ones. Some are faster, some hit harder. Early on, stick with the slower ones to build up your score without getting overwhelmed. Save the speedy nightmares for when you're confident in your aim.

On mobile, the joystick and jump button can feel cramped. I found that adjusting the screen sensitivity in settings makes camera control way less jerky. Don't ignore that -- a twitchy camera got me killed more times than the monsters did.

Finally, the leaderboard is global, but your score resets if you die. So don't get cocky. One mistake and you're back to zero. Play safe, prioritize staying alive over racking up points fast.
