Early on, you're mostly doing simple stuff like deciding whether to explore a cave or stay on the beach. But by chapter three, things get nasty. There's a night-time sequence in the abandoned resort where you have to avoid traps--like a collapsing floor or a poisoned well--by remembering clues from earlier conversations. The game calls these 'Danger Prompts,' and they flash on screen with a countdown timer. If you pick wrong, you get a game over screen with a creepy drawing of the heroine's fate. The satisfying moments come when you piece together that the friendly island guide is actually the one sabotaging the boat, or when you save the doctor from a snake bite because you remembered he's allergic to a specific plant. Difficulty spikes around the midpoint, in a level called 'The Hidden Temple,' where you have to solve a simple pattern puzzle under pressure--match symbols on three stone doors while a storm rages. Fail, and you drown. Later, you unlock a 'Heart Meter' that tracks your relationship points with each guy, but it's hidden until you reach a certain scene, so you have to guess who likes you. There's no real upgrade system, but you can replay chapters to unlock alternate costumes and secret diary entries that reveal backstory about the island's curse. The controls never get more complex than tapping buttons, but the tension comes from not knowing if one wrong tap sends you back to the main menu.

Finally, if you hit a dead end, revisit earlier islands -- one area's locked chest needs a key from a completely different location you'd forgotten about.
