Boxteria
How to Play
Game Overview
Boxteria is this weird, blocky sandbox game where you basically just spawn stuff and watch it fight. The visual style is pure low-poly charm, like someone built a world out of colored cubes in their garage, and it actually looks kind of cool in a goofy way. You pick a character class -- bandits, zombies, cops, that sort of thing -- and then just click to drop them into the map. They start brawling immediately, and you can either join in or just sit back and watch the chaos unfold. The Russian Village map has these little huts and fences, and the Courtyard is more open with some stairs and walls, so the fights feel different depending on where you spawn stuff. It's not really about winning or losing -- there's no story or levels. You just mess around. Spawn a car, do a drift, jump out, let the zombies chase the cops. The controls are simple, which is good because the game doesn't hold your hand. On PC, left mouse spawns whatever you've selected, Tab cycles through options, and space jumps. V starts a war mode where everyone goes nuts. Phone controls are just on-screen buttons, which works fine. Who would get hooked? People who like toy box games, or anyone who just wants to blow off steam without thinking too hard. It's janky and unpolished in a way that's actually charming. The cars handle like shopping carts, the characters ragdoll funny, and sometimes the AI does stupid stuff that makes you laugh. If you ever played those old Garry's Mod sandbox servers, this gives off that same "let's see what happens" vibe.
About Boxteria
Boxteria isn't really about a story or some big bad you need to beat. You boot it up, and you're basically in a sandbox where the main loop is: pick a side, spawn guys, watch them fight, maybe hop in a car and cause chaos. At first, you're just messing around with the green weapon -- that's your spawn tool. Left click to drop a character or a car, depending on what you've selected with Tab. The default characters are classes like bandits, cops, and zombies, and they'll automatically start fighting each other if they're from opposing teams. You can spawn a bunch, and it gets wild fast.
What you're doing with your hands is mostly spawning and driving. Space to jump, B to get in a car, Mouse Wheel to cycle through tools -- there's also a weapon that lets you shoot directly, which is fun for picking off enemies yourself. The satisfying moment is when you've got a whole squad of zombies swarming a bandit hideout, and you drift a car through the middle of it. Or when you start a war by pressing V, and suddenly everyone's on the offensive. The difficulty? It doesn't really ramp up in a traditional sense -- the challenge is more about managing chaos. Later on, you realize you can spawn specific cars like the muscle car or the off-roader, and each handles differently. Drifting feels good once you get the hang of it, and you can pull off tricks mid-air after hitting a ramp.
Maps like Russian Village have tight corners and houses where fights get messy, while Courtyard is more open for big vehicle battles. There's no upgrade system per se, but the fun comes from experimenting with different class combos -- like mixing cops with zombies to see who wins. The phone controls are just on-screen buttons, which works okay for quick sessions. Some characters have ranged attacks, others just melee, so you learn to spawn accordingly. The game doesn't tell you much, which is fine -- you figure out that spawning a car next to a crowd of enemies can crush them, or that jumping off a car roof gives you a height advantage. It's unscripted, so every match feels different. You might spend ten minutes just spawning and watching, or you might lead a full assault. That's the whole thing -- no neat ending, just whatever you make happen.
Tips & Tricks
Spawning cars first is a trap. I kept wasting time on vehicles early on, but the real fun starts when you focus on building a balanced squad of characters. Mix a bandit with a zombie and watch them wreck the other team -- the AI handles combat better than you'd expect.
The GREEN weapon is your best friend, but don't spam it. Click once to spawn a character, then double-tap for a car. If you mash the button, you'll flood the map with useless stuff and lag everything. Learned that the hard way.
Drifting in cars isn't just for show. Hold the turn key while tapping the brake (Space on PC) and you'll slide around corners way faster than normal driving. This helps in the Courtyard map where tight turns are everywhere.
Tab to switch between character and car spawns is critical. I spent five minutes trying to figure out why my bandits weren't appearing -- turns out I was still on the car tab. Check the icon before you click 🔍.
Starting a war with V is risky if your team isn't ready. The enemies will swarm instantly. Build up at least three characters before hitting that button, or you'll get flattened.
Phone controls work, but the buttons are tiny on smaller screens. I recommend zooming in with two fingers before trying to spawn anything -- saves a lot of misclicks.
One weird trick: if you jump (Space) right before hitting a ramp in a car, you'll fly way higher. Great for pulling off tricks, but watch your landing or the car explodes ⏱️.
