The cow of the apocalypse
How to Play
Game Overview
So I finally got around to playing The Cow of the Apocalypse, and it's exactly as bonkers as it sounds. You play as Dasha, this cow who's had enough of farm life and just bolts into the city to do whatever she wants. The game's got this rough, almost early-2000s 3D look -- blocky buildings, weird textures, and the cow model is just hilarious, with these big googly eyes and a permanent angry expression. It feels like a physics sandbox where nothing is too serious. You can run around smashing into things, jump onto cars, and eventually steal helicopters and tanks. The cops come after you in waves, getting more aggressive each time, but you're a cow with a machine gun, so it's not exactly fair. The whole thing plays like a chaotic fever dream -- you'll be flipping a police car one second, then flying a helicopter into a skyscraper the next. The controls are clunky but that's part of the charm; it's not trying to be polished. Anyone who loves stupid fun, like goat simulator but with more destruction and a weird political message about cow rights, will get hooked. It's short, maybe a couple hours to see everything, but the stupid grin it put on my face was worth it. Not a masterpiece by any stretch, but a great way to kill an afternoon if you're into absurdist humor.
About The cow of the apocalypse
So you''re a cow named Dasha who''s had enough of the farm life. The game starts with a cutscene showing her busting out of a barn, and then you''re dumped into the first level, called "Green Escape." Right away, you''re in a small rural area with a few tractors and hay bales. The controls are simple: WASD to move, space to jump, shift to sprint. Left click shoots your... well, Dasha''s main attack is a sort of energy blast from her horns? It''s weird but it works. You smash everything--fences, mailboxes, those little wooden sheds. The first cops show up in a single patrol car. They''re not tough; two shots and they''re done. The satisfying part is the sound: glass shatters, metal crumples, and Dasha lets out this ridiculous "moo" like a battle cry.
The loop is: run through a district, cause enough property damage to fill a meter at the top of the screen, then a helicopter spawns. You can hijack it by jumping on it and pressing E when prompted. Flying feels janky but fun--you can rain down missiles on police stations. There are four main areas: "Suburban Sprawl" (houses and pools), "Downtown Chaos" (skyscrapers and cafes), "Industrial Rumble" (factories and cargo trucks), and "Military Zone" (tanks and bunkers). Difficulty ramps hard in Industrial Rumble because cops start using shotguns and armored vans that take six blasts. Later, you unlock a motorcycle that lets you do wheelies and run over pedestrians (which adds to your destruction multiplier). The upgrade system is barebones: you collect "freedom points" from smashed objects and spend them on health, blast radius, and sprint duration. There''s no story progression beyond the levels; you just pick one from the menu.
Mechanics show up slowly. In Downtown Chaos, you can enter buildings through doors--cafes, banks, apartments--and trash the interiors for bonus points. The police AI gets smarter: they flank, use tear gas (which slows your movement), and call in SWAT teams in the Military Zone. The most satisfying moment is when you steal a combat helicopter in "Skies of Rage" and take out a bridge full of cop cars. The explosion physics are silly--cars flip like toys. There''s a hidden boss fight in the last level: a mech suit driven by the farmer. You have to smash his legs while dodging missiles. It takes like ten minutes your first time.
Tips: Don''t waste time on every bush--focus on vehicles and buildings for points. Switch between ground and air often; the helicopter''s missiles reload faster if you land and get back in. The sprint button is your best friend for dodging tear gas. Later levels have mounted turrets on rooftops--those are easy to destroy from afar. The game crashes sometimes if you blow up too much at once. Save often.
It''s rough around the edges but that''s part of the charm. You''re a cow with a grudge and a city to wreck.
Tips & Tricks
When you first get control of Dasha, don't just charge straight into the biggest crowd of cops. That's a quick way to get flattened before you even learn the rhythm of the fight. Instead, spend a few minutes on the quieter streets, smashing lampposts and mailboxes to build up momentum and get a feel for the jump timing -- it's floatier than it looks. The helicopter section is where most people hit a wall. The trick is to not hold down the fire button constantly; tap it in short bursts to conserve ammo and keep your aim steady. I wasted a ton of rockets early on because I held it down like a maniac. Also, when you're on foot, the sprint button (Shift) is your best friend for dodging, but it drains stamina fast. Don't hold it all the time -- tap it right when a police car swerves toward you to slip past at the last second. Entering buildings seems optional, but some have health pickups hidden on upper floors. Climb onto a car first, then jump to a balcony if you can't reach a ledge directly. The cops get smarter in later waves -- they'll try to box you in. That's when you grab a car and drive through their lines instead of fighting head-on. Finally, the 'pop-up buttons' that appear on screen during certain interactions? Don't ignore them. They're not just decoration; you need to click them within a second or two to pull off moves like flipping a car or dodging a helicopter missile. Miss the timing and you're toast.
